Since 2023, Tom Spiker and Matt Glassmeyer played hot potato with this alien, back and forth from Philadelphia to Nashville, to decrease angst, quiet, confusion, and, perhaps, radiation exposure. Each composed / improvised limb of the result is attached to the whole with marionette thread.
With Hompulon, this duo has generated an orchestra of odd with ambiguous geography. Tom plays guitars, drums, synths, drum machines, pedal steel, bass, gonje, and a plastic snail. Matt pulls brand new sounds from a Wurlitzer as well as his reedless tenor and shuitar inventions. He also uses cornet, euphonium, piano, pandeiro, saxophone, violin, percussion and voice.
On February 26, 2025 at Brooklyn creative music center, Barbes, Hompulon will come to life for the fourth time in a year with the help of New York experts Tim Keiper (David Byrne, Trevor Dunn) on drums and percussion, Dana Lyn (D'Angelo, Hadestown) on strings, Jon Goldberger (John Zorn, Red Baraat) on guitar, Brian Drye (Billy Martin, Steven Bernstein) on trombone. In these deep and well-attended shows Tom plays bass VI guitar and Moog while Matt focuses on reedless tenor, Wurlitzer, and percussion.
Matt Glassmeyer plays with Dana Lyn's keyboard trio, Brian Drye's Ocean State, Rix Glassmeyer with Jano Rix of the Wood Brothers, in Slow Accordion with Oliver Wood, and his solo work, Meadownoise. Matt played on Bill Morrison's Dockworker's Dream and toured Europe with Lambchop, at Bonnaroo with The Wood Brothers, at the Albert Hall with The Mavericks, and shows with Aretha Franklin. In New York, Matt was in ensembles with improvisers Jacob Garchik, Shane Endsley, Sean Moran, Michael McGinnis, Matt Pavolka, Dan Weiss, Justin Mullens, and Sunny Jain.
Tom Spiker is a Philadelphia music producer and session player. He has worked with Bilal, Marshall Allen, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, John Medeski, Steven Bernstein, Burhan Öçal and Kelis. His studio, Undercarriage Recording, is a specialized hub for creative projects. Other recent projects include Matt Hollenberg / Calvin Weston / Tom Spiker trio, Flanafi, and Tom Spiker’s Junk Shop.
